AI backers sit on billions before IPO
Early and late stage investors in Anthropic hold massive paper gains ahead of a potential trillion dollar listing.

Anthropic is preparing for a public offering that could value the company at up to two trillion dollars this year. Such a listing would create significant wealth for the venture capital firms and individuals who backed the artificial intelligence lab during its growth phases. Even at the most recent private market valuation of 965 billion dollars, the stakes held by key investors already represent billions in paper gains. These figures reflect the current private pricing rather than the projected future market value.
The timeline of these investments spans several years, marking distinct stages in the company's financial history. In 2021, former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt participated in the Series A round. At that time, the startup was valued at 461 million dollars. Today, his position represents approximately one percent of the company. Based on the current private valuation, that single share holding is worth nearly 10 billion dollars, marking a substantial return on his early entry.
Later stage capital entered the mix as the company scaled its operations. Last year, the investment firm Iconiq wrote a check for 6 billion dollars when Anthropic was already valued at 183 billion dollars. That late stage bet has since appreciated to 17 billion dollars. If the public offering materializes at the upper end of the projected range, this position could double in value, highlighting the leverage available in late stage equity.
Menlo Ventures has been a persistent presence in the company's capital structure. The firm led the Series D round and has invested over 1 billion dollars over time. This cumulative investment has grown into a stake now valued at 14 billion dollars. Meanwhile, Sequoia entered the arena earlier this year. At that point, the company carried a 380 billion dollar valuation. Sequoia invested 3 billion dollars to secure about one percent ownership, effectively more than doubling its initial outlay in a short period.
Other notable players include Sound Ventures, which was launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher. The firm initially put 35 million dollars into the 2023 Series C round. It subsequently added 400 million dollars to its position. This combined investment has resulted in a stake worth billions today. Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to start a new venture capital firm, though the firm's Anthropic position remains active.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only known venture firm with a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested 75 million dollars in the same 2023 Series C round, when the valuation stood at 5 billion dollars. That initial position has ballooned more than ninety times. It is now worth approximately 7 billion dollars. These varied entry points illustrate how different stages of investment have captured different portions of the value creation in this leading AI lab.
As the company moves toward a potential listing, these holdings stand to increase further. The spread of entry valuations, from the mid 2021 range to the recent 380 billion dollar mark, shows the depth of interest from both early and late stage capital providers. The coming months will determine if these private market gains translate into the projected public market valuations.
